What is gum disease?
Gum disease or Periodontal Disease is a major cause of tooth loss, and dental care in Yonkers for treatment of this disease is offered at our office . The early stage of gum disease is known as gingivitis. The symptoms of Gingivitis are red, swollen and bleeding gums. These symptoms appear when routine brushing and flossing are not being completed each day or there is an area that is misaligned and hard to keep clean. With proper care gingivitis is reversible.
If gingivitis is left untreated, it can advance and become periodontal (gum) disease. When bacteria accumulate around the gum line and just below the gum line they can create pockets beneath the gums. The plaque hardens and becomes tartar build up. It is a hardened form of plaque. In the pocket below the gum, the plaque and tartar cycle continuously inflame the gums causing the swelling and bleeding. What has developed as a result of this cycle is gum disease which we then called Periodontitis. Gum disease or Periodontitis is not reversible. With help from your dentist Periodontitis can be arrested in the stage that it is in. Some of the symptoms of Periodontitis are:
- Swollen or bleeding gums
- Red or purplish color of the gums
- Bad breath
- Bad taste in your mouth
- Teeth that are loose
- Receding gums/ exposed roots
- Evidence of pus around the gum line or around the teeth.
Yonkers Avenue Dental can help you successfully treat gum disease. At your comprehensive examination appointment, Dr. Rajani will develop a personalized periodontal treatment plan that will focus on treating the individual needs you have. Some of the treatment therapies may include:

- Prescription for antibiotic medication or rinses

- Orthodontics to properly align teeth, to prevent food and plaque accumulating again.
According to the American Heart Association there is a direct link between gum disease and heart disease. There are also systemic links between gum disease and premature labor and diabetes. Yonkers Avenue Dental can help you with either gingivitis or periodontitis. Waiting to treat this condition encourages further destruction of the gums. Call us today for an appointment.
