What is Invisalign?

Invisalign is a special treatment system that straightens teeth without using traditional braces. For people who are 17 or older, this system is a welcome relief from imagining adulthood with braces affixed to their teeth. Yonkers Avenue Dental can offer Invisalign to potential candidates at their complimentary orthodontic consultation, at the same time of your Examination appointment. Invisalign also is available for those persons who have periodontal (gum) issues and recurring cavities, to alleviate crowding and/ or plaque accumulation. The advantages of Invisalign treatment in Yonkers are just too good to ignore.

How does Invisalign work?

Invisalign uses customized, clear plastic aligners which are worn over your natural teeth, both day and night. They are removed only to eat and clean your teeth (flossing and brushing).  An advantage to using Invisalign is that the aligners are virtually invisible and people usually don’t even notice them. With traditional braces, patients must return to the office monthly to check on the progress of tooth movement and to see if the wires need to be adjusted. With Invisalign, you simply switch to the next set of aligners at an interval that Dr. Rajani will personally create for you.

A disadvantage of traditional braces is that they can leave slight discoloration on your teeth from the brackets that are cemented to your enamel. Plaque can also accumulate next to the brackets causing demineralization of your enamel. When treatment is complete, you can have straight teeth which may need cosmetic repair where the brackets were previously. This is not a concern for Invisalign wearers.

For those patients who have recurring cavities and gum problems due to crowding of teeth where plaque accumulation is continual, Invisalign may be right for you. Straightening of teeth prevents food and plaque from accumulating and teeth are easier to clean and maintain.

Frequently Asked Questions

Cosmetic dentistry usually involves a single corrective procedure. A “smile makeover” might include 2-6 procedures involving multiple teeth. It might also start incorporating teeth straightening measures like Invisalign and other surgeries such as root canals. In short, it’s a holistic approach to treating a mouth that has suffered from extensive damage or trauma.

Every smile makeover case requires an extensive, thorough consultation to determine the scope of work. Smile makeovers may also require many months, even years, of treatment. However, a smile makeover is basically cosmetic dentistry—you can think of it as cosmetic dentistry taken to the next level.

You’ve seen the TV commercials touting the benefits of Invisalign treatment. Now, you’d love to explore Invisalign for yourself. It would be great to have beautiful, straight teeth without having to wear braces!

Indeed, Invisalign can be a fantastic option for many patients. Read on to learn more about it. We’ve gathered some common questions and concerns regarding Invisalign so you can make the decision that’s right for you.

First, we make a 3D model of your mouth. This model gives us a good idea of what the end result is going to look like. It also shows us all the steps we’ll be taking along the way.

We spend quite a bit of time talking with patients about this model. We look at the end result and ask them if that’s what they’re looking for, and if it will make them happy. If not, we spend a long time modifying and adjusting the model to make sure patients like the end results.

Once they do, we use this information to create a series of custom-built alignment trays. Patients wear these trays for two weeks at a time, in order, for at least 22 hours a day. The teeth are slowly brought into alignment over time.

Though Invisalign is often marketed to adults who are embarrassed to use braces, teens may use them as well. However, you’ll want to make sure your teen is mature enough to remain compliant with his or her treatment plan.

One nice thing about using the Invisalign system is you can pretty much eat whatever you want (with the exception of chewing gum).

You can even take the alignment trays out when it’s time to eat a meal. Clean your teeth, then put them back in. It’s simple, and very convenient.
